Sometimes, a simple solution is the most effective!

US steel product manufaturer, Erico (of Lenton coupler fame) has developed a highly novel, effective and economical solution to brittle punching shear. The "Lenton Steel Fortress" shear reinforcement system is manufactured from continuous flat steel strip bent into a "double u" to the required depth that installs quickly and is easily tied over the top layer of main slab reinforcing bars. Through the inherent flexibility of the system, those perennial site problems of late design changes and irregular or congested rebar placement are easily accommodated by this novel product. Manufactured from steel with a minimum yield strength of 72,500 psi (500Mpa) and a minimum elongation of 11%, it complies with most modern design Standards.
What appeals to me is that the simple material solution of "Lenton Steel Fortress" provides a number of advantages that other traditional and proprietary punching shear reinforcement systems do not provide in total: It eliminates the need for stud reinforcement systems, column capitals, drop panels and additional stirrups; It optimizes rebar placement, reducing congestion: It develops its yield strength over a much smaller length, enabling it to be used in thinner concrete slabs: It saves time, labour and therefore site cost by going in after the rebar is placed: it is easy to place by virtue of its "open" profile and light weight and, particularly in this increasingly dollar-conscious age, it is highly cost-effective.
